Characteristics
ad blocking
SmartTubeNext does not display banner ads, pre-roll ads, or intermediate ads. Not only does it try to avoid them, but it’s literally programmed so that it can’t display any ads, so YouTube can’t swipe anything. This also means that you cannot allow whitelisted ads or channels. Some YouTube channels include sponsored posts in their videos, these can also be skipped, see SponsorBlock below.
SponsorBlock
SmartTubeNext includes an integration with SponsorBlock. From the SponsorBlock website:
SponsorBlock is an open source browser extension and open API for bypassing sponsor segments in YouTube videos. […] the extension automatically skips backers it knows about using a privacy-preserving query system. It also supports skipping other categories such as intros, outros, and reminders to subscribe. [and non-music parts in music videos].
You can select which categories you want to skip in the settings. Unlike the browser plugin, in SmartTubeNext you cannot send new segments (TVs and TV remotes are not good devices for such precise operations).
Foundry
To stream videos from your phone (or other devices), you need to link that device to your TV. Unlike the original YouTube app, SmartTubeNext doesn’t appear automatically when you’re on the same Wi-Fi network. How to link your smartphone and TV:
open SmartTubeNext and go to settings
go to “link devices” (2nd option)
open your youtube app on your phone go to settings > watch on tv
click connect using tv code and enter your tv code
Picture in Picture (PiP)
SmartTubeNext supports playing videos in PiP mode. This needs to be enabled in Settings > General > Background playback > Picture in Picture. The video will enter PiP mode when you press Home while playing a video, and also when you press Back if enabled in Settings > General > Background playback (wake).
adjust speed
You can adjust the playback speed by pressing the speed indicator (indicator) icon on the top row of the player. This is remembered through videos. Some speeds may cause frame drops, this is a known issue.
Voice search
To enable global voice search, an additional app must be installed along with SmartTubeNext. This bridge app can intercept system attempts to open the original YouTube app and open SmartTubeNext instead. For this to work, you need to uninstall the original YouTube app. We know this sucks, but you can always reinstall if you change your mind. The bridge app will not appear in your launcher and you will not be able to launch it directly; it is only used internally by the system voice search. On some devices, you must explicitly say “Youtube” when searching (for example, say “youtube cute cats” instead of just “cute cats”).
On Amazon Fire TV, to enable voice search support, you need to do the following:
uninstall the original YouTube app (no root required on Amazon FireTV device)
download and install the Amazon Bridge SmartTube appNext: _https://kutt.it/stn_bridge_amazon (for example, via Downloader for AFTVnews)
On all other Android devices, root is unfortunately required to enable this:
root your device (look for a guide for your specific device)
uninstall official youtube app using root (adb shell pm uninstall com.google.android.youtube.tv)
download and install the ATV Bridge SmartTube appNext: _https://kutt.it/stn_bridge_atv (for example via Downloader for AFTVnews)
